Thematic Workshop on ‘Space and Climate Change’
Climate change, refers to the long-term shift in temperatures and weather pattern due to natural or human activities, is one of the major threats to the planet Earth. Climate change has been evidenced through various indicators including rise in global surface temperature (termed as global warming), rise in sea level, altered precipitation pattern, increase in frequency of extreme events etc. Human influence on Earth’s climate system, including the impacts on weather and climate extremes, is now an established fact through various scientific observations and analyses.
Space science and technology is a powerful tool in the fight against climate change, providing satellite-based data, insights, and potential future solutions for mitigating its effects on Earth. In order to spread awareness on climate change in society and promote the application of space science and technology to address this issue, the chosen theme for World Space Week (WSW) 2024 is “Space & Climate Change”.
As part of the World Space Week 2024 celebrations organized by VSSC/IISU/LPSC/IIST, a one-day thematic workshop is planned to conduct on October 09, 2024 at VRC Auditorium, VSSC.
Various activities are planned in this workshop, which include technical talks by eminent scientists on Space and climate change followed by a panel discussion where in participants can interact with experts in the domain of space and climate.
In addition, visit to various experimental facilities at VSSC related to the theme and live demonstration of high-altitude balloon launch for vertical profiling of atmospheric parameters is also planned.
In order to participate in the workshop, list of interested faculty/students from colleges, nominated by the head of the institution, with details has to be sent via email to wsw_tw[at]vssc[dot]gov[dot]in on or before September 27, 2024. The details should include Name, Institute, Mobile Number and Aadhaar number of each participant. Selection of application will be based on first come first served and limited to 100 participants, providing opportunity to maximum number of institutions.
